According to principal investigator Dr John Orr, introducing synthetics like plastic into concrete generally weakens the material, as plastic doesn’t bond to the cement mix like sand does. Central to the work was finding the balance between maintaining the concrete’s strength, yet still incorporating enough plastic into the concrete so a significant amount of sand could be saved.

Because of their other role as the basis of the intertidal habitat, the borrow-pits could not simply be plundered for the clay material, but had to be carefully excavated according to the design, with predetermined levels and slopes to ensure their suitability as natural landforms. “This was not just an engineering decision but also an ecological one” says Bandy. On top of the clay core, earthmoving subcontractor Ovenden carefully added layers of fertile material. “The outer layers vary across the site depending on the local distribution and consist of different materials including sand, shingle, topsoil and subsoil,” says Bandy. This has been planted with a variety of species appropriate to the location – topsoil seeded with meadow wildflower mix used along the inland face of the embankment and coarser sedges and rushes on more exposed areas.

He also noted that Parmalat did invest to try and make the lagoon as effective as possible, installing a new  aeration-related equalization tank while “adding everything we possibly can to mitigate the odour” in the “short term.”

In regards to the boom and arm assembly, the boom is a two-piece boom that is adjustable to accommodate both physical site limitations as well as lifting capabilities. While almost every manufacturer offers a two-piece boom, the way in which the Liebherr is hinged is different from others.
