Many people in Tebu and Gbokoda communities have been living there from birth but say they have not seen any positive development. Kingsley Omamogho, Tebu community home-based PRO says he attended his primary and secondary school in Gbokoda. Of the four communities visited, only Gbokoda has a functional school and Tebu school children walk for about 40 minutes to attend school in Gbokoda.

For many years, contractors used asphalt as an interlayer to separate, drain and provide a cushion layer for the new concrete overlay, he says. 

The study, conducted in partnership with India’s Goa Engineering College, was prompted by India’s booming construction sector and a sand shortage the country is enduring as a result. It’s estimated more than 20 billion tons of concrete are produced globally each year, making it the world’s second most consumed substance after fresh water. Sand typically comprises 30 per cent of any concrete mixture. By replacing 10 per cent of that sand with finely ground plastic particles, the Bath team estimates that over 800 million tonnes of sand could be saved.

“I would say, like anything new, start small,” advises Zeller. “Start off and learn and ask for help. The manufacturers of the fabric are really good resources.”

As a banner at the assembly yard showed, the final blueprint had no anchors. Instead, it consisted of a free-floating boom, bent into the shape of a horseshoe, with a skirt secured to its underside.
