With the causeway being the one access to Nahant, the challenge to Pihl Inc. was to keep two lanes open in, and two lanes out, at all times.

“The plastic we use in the mixes are by-products of other industrial processes,” he explained. “As an example – the manufacture of plastic optical lenses for glasses produces finely ground plastic waste which would normally be sent to landfill or incinerated. So you could argue there is no extra energy required to then use this material in concrete, we are making use of a waste material from other processes.”

“I want to assure you that any organic waste we remove from the facility is all done in compliance with the MOE [Ministry of Environment] with all proper permits from all the people that handle it,” he said.

Now, researchers are comparing the new options "with the previous options we looked at back in 2014, so we have a draft report of that work," he told CBC News.

"We need to be ready to behave in different ways, even uncomfortable and inconvenient, to make a change. We need to find a way to coexist well with nature. The permanent installation of spontaneous plants will be a constant reminder, a catalyst for our awareness."

For improvements and expansion of its Hendersonville, North Carolina nonwoven manufacturing facility, US$30 million have been approved by Kimberly-Clark Corporation. U by Kotex, Poise, Depend, and other North American feminine and adult care brands of the company use nonwoven materials produced by the plant. Maintaining current employment, the two-year project is expected to increase 14 new jobs at the plant. It will concentrate on the expansion of the plant’s efficiency and production capacity. The company’s feminine and adult care business in the region will receive support from the Berkeley Mill team.
